Glenside development's update

Towering high above Glenside, a historic water tower is set for a fresh lick of paint that highlights “the complex and fragile balance” of the local environment.

Artist concept designs use the tower’s size “to create an illusion effect of a giant, monolithic gum”, also showcasing fauna species found in South Australia like the blue banded bee, the pygmy possum, rainbow lorikeets, and more.

This concept is a symbol of the community’s commitment to nature, and also a reminder of how many species can rely on something as simple as a gum tree, the concept statement said.

With a title of ‘Share house with great views, unique roommates’, … could “make people laugh whilst also reflecting on the idea that a tree is actually a place someone calls home”.

“The Kingfisher emerges from the water at the base of the tree and makes a big splash in the process,” the artist’s statement said.

“The tree will be covered in water droplets … [and they] will be dripping from all flowers, as if they have been hit by a massive downpour; and butterflies will be drinking from water droplets and also have a few drops on their wings.”

Located across from Burnside Biodiversity and The Shed, the concept statement said the artwork could be seen from nearby residents’ own windows.

The artwork would tie “together the themes of water, trees, and environment that SA Water and Burnside residents and council work so hard to maintain”.
