City of Holdfast Bay set to introduce three-year rate increase to fund $40m Jetty Rd renovation

Holdfast Bay ratepayers will each be made cough up more than $120 extra over the next three years to help fund a major $40m renovation of Jetty Rd.

The average household is expected to be hit with a $41 increase next financial year to fund the multimillion-dollar development, with council anticipating that figure to be at a “similar level” across the following two years – totalling upwards of $120.

A council spokesman said the 2024/25 budget was still being finalised.

“Council has secured $10m from the Australian Government to help deliver the coast zone (part of the project). The remaining $30m will be funded by council,” he said.

“This budget to fund our wide range of council services is still being finalised, but we are anticipating an increase of $41 for the average household next year to specifically fund the Jetty Rd project. We anticipate an increase at this similar level for two further years for the Jetty Rd project.”

The council’s draft budget will be released on April 24 for a consultation period open until May 17.

Mayor Amanda Wilson last week unveiled the $40m project which will see the kilometre-long stretch of Jetty Rd renovated from late 2024 until its expected completion in 2027.

The project aims to improve carparking, public transport and pedestrian design of the road, as well as support the shopping, dining and entertainment sectors.

“The Transforming Jetty Rd, Glenelg project is the biggest undertaking our council has committed to,” Ms Wilson said.

“We’ve heard what the community has told us about the need to upgrade Jetty Rd and we’re further improving and building on the ideas first proposed in the masterplan.

“If we want Holdfast Bay to continue to be a desirable destination, where people want to live, do business and visit, then we need to invest in the future of our city.”
