Glenelg’s Jetty Rd is about to undergo a major transformation with a multimillion-dollar budget aimed at becoming a “world-class destination”.
The Holdfast Bay mayor Amanda Wilson has unveiled the $40m project which will see the one kilometre stretch of Jetty Rd renovated from late 2024 until its expected completion in 2027.
The project aims to improve carparking, public transport and pedestrian design of the road, as well as support the shopping, dining and entertainment sectors.
Ms Wilson has heralded this as a much needed upgrade to Adelaide’s favourite beachside.
“The Transforming Jetty Rd, Glenelg project is the biggest undertaking our Council has committed to,” she said.
“(It) will not only benefit Glenelg, it will have a positive impact on the full breadth of the city, including residents, local traders, visitors and the wider southern and western region of Adelaide.
“If we want Holdfast Bay to continue to be a desirable destination, where people want to live, do business and visit, then we need to invest in the future of our city.”
The renovation will be done in three zones to ensure minimal disruptions to traders, residents and visitors throughout the precinct.
The zones are – the City zone which will become the new entry at Brighton Rd, followed by the transition zone from Nile St to Partridge St and Gordon Rd intersection and lastly the Coast zone.
Plans for each zone were based on feedback received from the community consultation on the Jetty Rd Masterplan in 2017-18.
However, the community will have the chance to provide feedback once the final concept plans for the Coast zone are confirmed.
“We’ve heard what the community has told us about the need to upgrade Jetty Rd and we’re further improving and building on the ideas first proposed in the masterplan,” Ms Wilson said.
The Mayor said that at the heart of the project lies a commitment to preserving the precinct’s historical character while ushering in a new era of growth and prosperity.
Council will allocate $30 million to the project along with a $10 million commitment already secured by the Australian Government for the Coast zone.
