Onkaparinga Council has announced a $2m plan to reconstruct Bains Rd in Woodcroft, improving the road surface and making it safer for pedestrians.
Installation aimed to begin in 2025 will see two new 1.5m wide concrete footpaths, as well as two central pedestrian refuges constructed.
Other items announced in the plan included: a new crossing point, separate lines for straight and turning vehicles, lighting at intersections along with relocating and upgrading bus stop 47 on both sides of Bains Rd.
Onkaparinga Council’s director of operations, Kirk Richardson said the project would ensure a “safer journey for all”.
“This project will deliver benefits for both pedestrians and motorists, ensuring a smoother and safer journey for all,” he said.
“Minor maintenance work adjacent to the electrical substation has taken place this financial year, with the major reconstruction work due to occur in 2025 subject to the council’s budgetary process.
“The City of Onkaparinga maintains a $1 billion road network including 2300km of kerbs, 1410km of sealed roads, 142km of unsealed roads and 32km of guard rails, with the Bains Road reconstruction just one of several road work projects underway in the wider region.”
The reconstruction comes after council previously announced upgrades to 21 intersections in McLaren Vale, a reconstruction of Old Coach Rd in Maslin Beach, an intersection upgrade at Piggott Range Road and Upper Penneys Hill Road, and two safety upgrades in Chandlers Hill.
A spokesperson for Onkaparinga Council said that the total budget of $2,023,100 was to be delivered over multiple financial years and “funded by rates income”.
“The first component of the project; minor maintenance, has been delivered in this financial year and has a budget of $40,000 which was approved by council through the 2023-24 budget process,” the spokesperson said.
“This represents 0.02 per cent of council’s overall budget, and equates to 0.02 per cent of the overall rates collected, or $0.48 of your individual rates.
“The works scheduled for 2024-25 include the roadworks from Investigator Drive east, including the associated footpath components, and is estimated at $412,100.
“The remainder of the works will be delivered in the 2025-26 financial year and will be subject to council’s annual budgetary process.”
The reconstruction is expected to take up to 10 weeks pending weather and contract availability.
Access will be allowed for the majority of the works with traffic restrictions in place.
Road closures are only likely to be used at key points in the construction program where required.
Council will provide advanced notification to the community so they can plan accordingly.
According to Mr Richardson, council recently resurfaced Coxs Hill Road “knowing that it may be used as an alternative route during the works”.
