Onkaparinga residents are outraged after their council announced another full closure of a well-used road – the second in as many months – to fix problems caused after it was used as a detour for the Main South Rd duplication.

The council posted on Facebook on Monday, informing the community Old Coach Road between Tuit Road and Oleander Road would be closed from Monday, April 8, to Tuesday, April 16, to allow for road pavement reconstruction works.

Access will still be allowed for emergency services, public buses, residents and businesses within the work zone.

Locals took to Facebook to express their frustration, with one person saying it was “getting ridiculous”.

“There is no easy way in and out of Aldinga for residents … Having to detour all over the place,” Ash Wolferstan said.

“I also hope no-one needs emergency care because the roads are already banked up at peak hour with road works.”

“Ridiculous that the two ways out of Aldinga both have road work,” Bec Deugarde said.

In February, Onkaparinga Council announced Old Coach Rd would undergo a reconstruction for stormwater infrastructure, minor road widening in some spots, line marking, bus bays, and guardrails.

Council acknowledged the community’s frustration with the most recent closure and “the fact local and state government projects are happening concurrently in the area”.

“Our Old Coach Road repairs were planned more than three years ago due to its poor condition, predating the state government’s announcement of the Main South Road duplication works. The fact Old Coach Road served as a detour during the state government’s works deteriorated the road further and intensified the urgency for our repairs once Main South Road reopened,” a spokesperson said.

“We’ve provided advanced notification to the community so they can plan accordingly, and traffic detours will be in place diverting drivers on to Main South Road during the closure.”

Construction is expected to be completed by late June 2024.
