One of Maslin Beach’s most popular roads will be closed and traffic restricted for weeks for safety upgrades.
Work will start on Old Coach Road – between Oleander Road and Tuit Road – mid February.
The reconstruction of the road will feature the installation of stormwater infrastructure, minor road widening in some spots, line marking, bus bays, and guardrails.
Traffic restrictions will be in place for the duration of the works, with complete road closures and detours required at “critical stages during construction,” a council spokesperson said.
Road closures will be put in place between February and April 2024, but council says motorists will receive advanced notice.
A spokesperson stated council had kept in mind agricultural traffic when designing the reconstruction.
“The design we have developed is in keeping with the farming nature in this area, forming a rural buffer between Maslin Beach and Aldinga Beach,” they said.
“Wherever possible we have designed the intersections along this length of road to cater to agricultural traffic along with other road users.”
Cyclists will also be able to enjoy the fruits of the development – to an extent – with an “informal” on-road cycle facility provided in the form of “widened shoulders.”
However, the shoulder will not be a designated cyclist path “at this stage,” said a spokesperson.
“No footpath or shared use path infrastructure is being delivered as part of this project,
“Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the path along the Main South Road corridor.”
Construction is expected to be completed by late June 2024.
