Aldinga Bridge between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach officially opens on Monday

A major milestone of the multimillion-dollar Main South Rd duplication project has now been completed – and officially opens to the public this week.

Stage Two of the Main South Road duplication project

The highly-anticipated Aldinga Bridge will officially open to the public on Monday, which is expected to help motorists travel between Aldinga Beach Rd to Sellicks Beach, quickly and safely.

It’s part of the new Aldinga Interchange and stage two of the Main South Rd duplication,

which realigned the intersection of Aldinga Beach Rd and Aldinga Beach.

Three U-turns were installed to ease local access, alongside the widening centre medians and wire rope barriers that now divide northbound and southbound traffic.

The project also upgraded Hart and Colville roads, Norman and Rogers roads, Hahn and Cox roads and Sellicks Beach Rd.

Pedestrians and cyclists now have access to a shared path along the western side of Main South Rd.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said it will create a “safer, seamless network to keep traffic flowing”.

“(It) will ease congestion and improve traffic flow and safety for locals and visitors alike, while improving connectivity, transport routes and supporting regional growth, bringing long-term benefits to the region for years to come,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

Main South Rd carries around 18,000 vehicles per day, which is expected to rise to 26,000 by 2036.

Short-term traffic signals will be placed at the new Main South Rd, Aldinga Rd and Aldinga Beach Rd intersection for public safety and better traffic flow, until the interchange fully opens next year.

Traffic on Main South Rd will be directed under the new bridge, with drivers now able to access the newly constructed northbound carriageway.

Stage one of the $810 million Fleurieu Connections project – between Seaford and Aldinga opened in March last year – with stage two expected to be finished and fully opened in 2026.
