Plans for stage two of Main South Rd duplication project between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach

With stage one of the Main South Road duplication now operational, plans have been revealed for the second stage which will connect Aldinga to Sellicks Beach. Watch the flythrough.

Stage Two of the Main South Road duplication project

Plans for the last stretch of the South Rd duplication have been revealed and are expected to improve safety between two popular seaside towns.

The state government promised to finish the project during its 2022 election campaign, aiming to speed up travel time between central Adelaide and the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Stage one of the road between Seaford and Aldinga has already opened, while stage two will connect Aldinga Beach Rd to Sellicks Beach.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the total $810 million package will be a “boon for local businesses” and create 405 full-time construction sector jobs.

“Around 17,000 vehicles travel on Main South Road every day,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“Continuing the duplication will improve safety and travel times for motorists, while also improving road and network connectivity to support regional growth and tourism across the Fleurieu Peninsula.”

New upgrades include the realignment of the Aldinga Beach Rd and Sellicks Beach Rd intersection, an underpass at the intersection of Main South Rd with the newly realigned Aldinga Rd and Aldinga Beach Rd, and three U-turns to facilitate local access.

New intersection upgrades on connecting roads will also be added as well as safety barriers along the main road.

Main South Road Action Group chairman Craig Curtis said the new upgrades would reduce head-on collisions.

The action group secured the new road after 77 crashes were recorded between 2012 and 2016 on the 10km stretch near Aldinga.

Stage two of the duplication is expected to open in 2026.
