Inspired by family, one Toowoomba woman from a long thread of talented sewers has started her own business.

After years spent behind her sewing machine, Hannah Thomas, 24, has launched her new venture, The Linen Label.

Specialising in handmade products for mums, bubs and the home, the mum-of-one said her passion for sewing had been passed down from family members.

“My mum and her aunt, who was a seamstress, taught me how to sew when I was about six years old,” Ms Thomas said.

“I have really fond memories of working on projects with my mum.”

When Ms Thomas relocated to the Toowoomba region and left family behind in North Queensland, she wanted to find a way to stay connected.

“My family and I will now send photos of our creations and ideas to each other, which is really special,” Ms Thomas said.

“For special events my husband’s family always dresses up in bright, tropical colours, so last Christmas I made us all matching outfits, and that really reignited my passion to get back into it.”

The new collection, which launched last weekend, includes aprons, microwavable heat packs and kitchen, baby and make-up wipes, in a variety of colours and patterns.

“My husband is Fijian, so I’m really drawn to those tropical styles,” Ms Thomas said.

“With this collection I have also branched out to include Australian native animals and indigenous prints.”

Becoming a mum for the first time 15 months ago, Ms Thomas said an added benefit of starting her own business meant she could still stay home with her son Malachi.

“With Covid-19, it’s hard to find a job in the current climate, so it’s worked out really well,” she said.

“Another motivator to starting this business was to offer affordable products for mums, bubs and the home, but without compromising the quality.”
