ALDI submitted plans to Whitsunday Regional Council in late November proposing a 7800m2 superstore on a currently empty lot at 7 – 11 Central Ave in Cannonvale.

North Queensland got its very first store when a crowd of hundreds excitedly lined up for ALDI’s grand opening at Willows Shopping Centre in Townsville, with one man lining up five hours for a vacuum cleaner.

The plans also come as Mackay anticipates its own store being built in Andergrove.

Documents prepared by Queensland-based consultants Project Urban state the German retailer does not try to be a “one-stop shop … unlike the larger supermarket chains of Coles and Woolworths”.

“ALDI provides a limited range of the most needed and used products for the average home, rather than providing a store where customers can buy every (or nearly every) grocery item they need”, the development application states.

“Unlike Woolworths and Coles supermarkets ALDI offers a core range of around 1300 products which is constantly reviewed to meet changing tastes and preference, which is far fewer than the 30,000 items that a mainstream supermarket might stock.

“(Instead) ALDI focuses on offering customers a range of exclusive brand, top quality products at low prices.”

Since ALDI’s first Australian store opened in 2001 it has opened 590 outlets across the country, documents state.

The chain’s popularity is built on their popular Special Buys aisle that change on a week-to-week basis, as well as an efficient approach to check-outs requiring customers pack their own bags.

Plans note the lot along Shute Harbour Road is part of a newly established commercial subdivision below Whitsunday Plaza Shopping Mall.
