A meth-using Whitsunday mum has been sentenced to two months’ jail after a failed attempt to talk her way out of trouble with tall tales about a shady tradie.
Sienna Lee Jay Duffy told police she had been “set up”, after a May 25 search of her Proserpine home uncovered 0.6 grams of methamphetamine, drug utensils, and a man’s Medicare card.
On probation at that time, Duffy initially blamed the Department of Housing for the items found in her bedroom.
She then changed her story to point the finger at an “extremely dodgy” plumber who had been working at the property that day.
The 25 year old’s excuses evidently failed to convince police, who charged her with possessing dangerous drugs, two counts of possessing utensils or pipes etc that had been used, receiving tainted property, and contravention of a probation order.
The mother-of-three pleaded guilty in Proserpine Magistrates Court to all charges this week.
Duffy’s solicitor Elizabeth Smith told the court her client was being a “smart alec” when she tried to pin the drug offences on the plumber.
On the Medicare card subject to the tainted property charge, Ms Smith said Duffy’s daughter had found it on the ground at the pub and kept it to “play shops with”.
Magistrate James Morton kept Duffy in custody overnight, then the following morning handed down concurrent jail sentences of two months suspended for 12 months, with one day of pre-sentence custody already served.
Duffy was also ordered to pay a $250 fine and forfeit the drug utensils.
“You turned your nose up at probation … Now you’ve got jail hanging over your head,” Mr Morton said.
