A new attraction is coming to Airlie Beach and promising fun for the whole family.
Approvals have been granted for the installation of a 35 metre high ferris wheel next to Airlie Creek on the Airlie Beach Foreshore.
The ferris wheel would be in place through the mid year school holidays, from June through to October.
The Skyline Ferris Wheel is said to provide 360 degree views of the Coral Sea, Foreshore, and Conway National Park on 24 gondolas each seating six people and dinner packages may also be available.
Construction will begin in early June and take approximately five days.
Whitsunday Regional Council director commercial businesses, Craig Turner, said each ride would be just $15.
“It’s actually priced so people in the community as well as visitors can enjoy it,” he said.
“To be able to come to the Whitsundays, go to the reef, go to Whitehaven, and on your lay day when your choosing to do nothing, go to the lagoon, chuck the kids on the ferris wheel with you and go and see the Whitsundays from a different perspective.”
After a five-month trial period the topic would go to public consultation he said to get feedback from locals and visitors on whether they saw long term value in the ferris wheel.
Attendance numbers would also be monitored throughout the trial period to see if it was viable for both Whitsunday Regional Council and third-party operator, Xtra Ordinary Events.
Similar Skyline Ferris Wheels have been installed on the Cairns Foreshore and Glenelg Foreshore, becoming popular attractions in recent years.
