What to do if you think a child is being abused

A Warwick man who appeared in Warwick District Court for possession and accessing child exploitation material has returned to court a week later.

Harley Grant James Brown returned back to Warwick Magistrates Court for four counts of breaching bail on Monday.

Appearing via videolink, the 31-year-old man pleaded guilty to the four charges relating to failing to appear and report to police officers while on bail during a period from December 2022 to January 2023.

The court was told on one occasion Brown went to report to Warwick Police Station, however the door was locked, and apparently failed to see the large sign posted on the door to use the phone if the station was unattended.

On another occasion, Brown failed to report due to a wedding which was on the same day.

Acting as friend of the court, duty lawyer Sarah Campbell told the court that Brown attempted to report to authorities on some of the days, but as they were public holidays he was unable to follow through.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told Brown ordinarily there would be a fine for this type of offending but as he would be making no income behind bars, there would be “no benefit to that”.

“Your bail obligation was to report every Monday, and you missed four Mondays – two of these were public holidays – but there were arrangements in place for this but you missed them,” Ms Sturgess said.

On January 30, Brown was sentenced to two years imprisonment in Warwick District Court by Judge Nathan Jarro for possessing and accessing child exploitation material.

His parole eligibility date set at September 30, 2023.

Brown was convicted and not further punished for the four bail breach offences.
