A Sunshine Coast councillor has slammed the former state government, claiming there was “no transparency” regarding the sale of public land earmarked for much-needed emergency services.

The development application for a car wash at 211 Sippy Downs Dr, Sippy Downs came before the Sunshine Coast Council at the ordinary meeting on Thursday, December 12.

The proposed car wash would feature a two-storey building along with multiple wash bays and an automatic car wash tunnel.

Sunshine Coast Council chief executive Debra Robinson said the land was sold by the state Labor government in July last year, without any notice provided to the council at the time.

The site was earmarked by the state for either an ambulance or fire station, near the existing Sippy Downs police station.

A report to the council recommended the proposal be approved, however accepted there was a community expectation the site was to provide public services rather than a commercial 24-hour car wash.

Councillor Christian Dickson said while he was disappointed the site would no longer be developed into an ambulance or fire station and labelled the state government’s move as providing “no transparency”, the car wash was a good outcome for the site.

Mr Dickson also said the future of neighbouring sites “really worries me”, adding the community was still pushing for the local police station to operate for 24 hours.

Councillor Terry Landsberg suggested the council look for a “better way” to engage with the state government regarding any future sales of public property, especially when the sites were earmarked as public services.

The car wash development ultimately received unanimous support from the council.

The former Labor state government and current LNP state member have both been contacted by this publication for comment.
