Sunshine Coast fight culture captured on Instagram

Videos of alleged fights between students and teenagers in public places have emerged on Instagram pages glorifying violence.

Several pages under different monikers around the theme “Sunny Coast fights” and “Sunshine Coast fights” reveal an alleged culture of fighting in schools and bus stops.

In the videos, students in their teens were filmed allegedly attacking each other in front of a crowd of onlookers.

The footage has been posted since the start of 2022, with the alleged brawls taking place in front of other schoolchildren and at the Sunshine Plaza bus stop in Maroochydore.

In audio from the videos, which the Sunshine Coast Daily has chosen to not to include, children can be heard encouraging the fight.

In a clip from the Sunshine Plaza bus stop in 2022, a teenager can be seen allegedly being accosted by two other boys only metres from a parked bus, with the brawl spilling out onto the road before the fight ends.

A TransLink spokesman said their department had not received any recent reports of assault at the Sunshine Plaza bus stop but encouraged the public to report any illegal behaviour to police.

“While the Queensland Police Service remains the lead authority for responding to and investigating any assaults or anti-social behaviour, TransLink is committed to helping provide a safe public transport network,” the spokesman said.

“Our targeted commitment to customer safety includes deploying 55 senior network officers on the South East Queensland bus network, who work closely with Queensland Rail authorised officers, the Queensland Police Service Rail Squad and customer service officers employed by GoldlinQ and Bus Queensland.”

The spokesman said senior network officers can be deployed to patrol potential hot spots for anti-social behaviour based on intelligence from the public, bus drivers and bus operators.

When asked if there was an issue with fighting in Sunshine Coast schools, a Department of Education spokesman said no evidence indicated there was an increase.

“Fighting between any young people is a serious concern for schools, families and the broader community and is treated very seriously by schools,” the spokesman said.

“Every Queensland state school has a Student Code of Conduct, developed in partnership with the local community.

“The Student Code of Conduct for each school details the ways staff will support students to contribute to a safe, supportive learning environment and lists possible consequences when behaviour standards are not met.”

The Instagram pages come as Sunshine Coast police investigate other alleged assaults by teenage girls at the Big Top Shopping Centre, the Sunshine Plaza bus stop and locations in Sippy Downs.
