Residents in a busy Sunshine Coast CBD will have a state-of-the art $1.1m CCTV system and permanent police beat before the end of 2025, the state government has pledged.
Premier David Crisafulli spoke outside the Nambour Police Station on Tuesday morning to announce the state government’s allocation of $1.1m towards CCTV and a new police beat in the Nambour CBD.
“There were two glaring omissions from the Nambour CBD, one was the lack of CCTV and the other was a permanent police presence to send a message that anti-social behaviour must be dealt with,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“I committed before the election I would deal with both and today I’m honouring that commitment.”
Nicklin MP Marty Hunt said Nambour had been left behind in terms of safety technology, frustrating many local business owners.
“This has been welcomed by the business community and the chamber of commerce and I want to see it done as a priority,” Mr Hunt said.
“The cameras will be live feed into the police station.”
Mr Hunt clarified the existing Nambour Police Station did operate 24 hours but there were set office hours.
Mr Hunt said it had not yet been decided where the cameras or the police beat would be in the Nambour CBD, but promised the community both services would be up and running this year.
“I’m meeting with the senior police next week about the logistics of it all so we are ready to go when the next budget is delivered,” Mr Hunt said.
“Not just in this term but by the end of this year.”
Sunshine Coast District Police Chief Inspector Jason Overland said he was thankful for the state government’s $1.1m commitment.
“The CCTV and the police beat announcement are just tools in our toolkit that will allow for us to do our work for the community,” Mr Overland said.
