Pelican Waters display home wins designers national award

A SUNSHINE Coast team has flown the flag for Queensland at the National Building Design Awards.

An Alexandra Headland home by Chris Clout Design received a commendation in the best new residential design, more than $1 million construction cost.
The brief for the winning design was to challenge the perceptions people have about display homes, designer Trevor Reitsma said.
Mr Reitsma, who has been designing homes for more than 25 years, was proud to have pulled off a national win against top-flight competition from Sydney and Melbourne.
"It's magnificent," he said.
"But to see the quality of design that is coming through is more important than the competition.
"We are always excited when Sunshine Coast builders, designers and architects win awards.
"We are thrilled for the builder, knowing it has worked."
The design demonstrated what was possible on a 15m wide and 480sq m lot.
The elevated pool, which does not need fencing on 75% of it, becomes the focal point to all living areas, bedrooms and the detached studio.
The clean-lined kitchen with flush rear wall and concealed butler's pantry takes minimal kitchens to the next notch.
The home is rectilinear, has a single-depth layout and is wrapped in glass and court
yards. The awards, held in Melbourne, saw more than 25 projects across Australia recognised for expertise, creativity and excellence in building design.
The Planet Homes' design was purpose driven, Reitsma said.
"We knew we were going fishing with this, to come up with a design to fit in the Pelican Waters display village."
He said the client, Jason Bowker of Planet Homes, wanted something provocative.
"We pushed the design envelope in many directions.
"It was a 15m wide block - not even 18-20m, so we were operating on a smaller lot yet we got a big home on it.
"It shows what's achievable with what's essentially a rectangular layout."
The multi-level home including outdoor living measures about 300sq m.
