Police investigating bomb threat at Maleny State High School after evacuation

Queensland Police are investigating a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of a school on the Sunshine Coast hinterland today, with classes set to resume.

Police are investigating a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of a school on the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police received a call about the bomb threat and attended Maleny State High School about 8.30am on Tuesday May 9, 2023.

The spokeswoman said police assisted the school in evacuating its students.

“The school was then cleared and reopened around 1:18pm,” she said.

“There appears to be no bomb.”

Maleny State High School released a statement on their Facebook page saying that students and staff were evacuated after a threat was made via telephone.

“We would like to inform our school community that this morning the Queensland Police Service responded to a threat made via telephone,” it read.

“As a safety measure, staff and students were evacuated.”

The statement said that a thorough search was conducted and police had given the all-clear.

“Students are currently eating their lunches and will return to class soon,” the statement posted at 1.36pm read.

“The police commented on the exemplary behaviour and calmness of our students.

“We would like to thank the police for their help and support.”

Maleny State High School principal Deborah Stewart said she believed the school would resume normal operations as of Wednesday, May 10.

“There’s no reason for it not to,” she said.

The Sunshine Coast Child Protection Investigation Unit’s probe into the bomb threat remain ongoing.
