A Sunshine Coast court has been told of how a teenager filmed himself speeding 60km/h over the limit moments before he crashed.

Petrie man Ashton Brent Winnett, 19, appeared in the Caloundra Magistrates Court on October 17 and pleaded guilty to 17 charges including 11 counts of filming burnouts, driving without due care and attention and speeding.

Police prosecutor Stu Lydford told the court Winnett had taken five videos as a passenger in a car performing burnouts across a 45-minute period on one occasion.

Sergeant Lydford said Winnett could be heard saying “make sure you lose traction” and “I spilled my bong,” even showing the spillage on camera.

The court was told he also filmed another driver travelling 119km/h on a different occasion.

Most of the hooning occurred in Landsborough.

Sergeant Lydford told the court of another occasion where Winnett ultimately crashed into a light post at Birtinya on February 15.

Police found a video of taken by Winnett while he was driving, stating in the footage he was going 110km/h in a 50km/h zone, the court was told.

Sergeant Lydford told the court Winnett had said “I’m ripping up the f---ing streets” followed by revving noises in the video.

The 19-year-old told police he had taken a bend on a wet road before the crash and he did not recall taking a video, the court was told.

Defence lawyer Rose Killip said her client, who was 18 at the time of the offences earlier this year, was struggling with substance abuse during the offending.

She told the court Winnett had since kept his substance issues under control and had sought out mental health services.

Ms Killip said the loss of Winnett’s licence would significantly impact his employment at Woolworths.

Ms Killip and Sergeant Lydford suggested Winnett receive a fine, but Magistrate Catherine Benson was hesitant, considering it would take him a “very long time” to pay off such a substantial amount.

She instead fined him $2500 and ordered him to complete community service.

Winnett did not lose his licence and no convictions were recorded.

Mr Winnett is facing 13 unrelated charges including seven counts of supplying drugs and one of trafficking drugs which will be heard before court on a later date.

He has not entered pleas in relation to the set of 13 charges.
