Zaviar Alexander Scott charged with fraud, stealing, breaking into cars

A Eumundi stonemason has made a bid for freedom after an alleged ‘escapade’ across Nambour and Tewantin, but one oversight led police to the 27-year-old.

Zaviar Alexander Scott applied for bail in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on October 17, where he appeared via Videolink from the Maroochydore Watch House.

A Sunshine Coast court has been told what triggered a 27-year-old Eumundi stonemason to go on an alleged crime spree and dishonestly spend $900.

Zaviar Alexander Scott applied for bail in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on October 17, 2022, where he appeared via videolink from the Maroochydore Watch House.

He faces 16 charges, including six of fraud, eight of unlawfully entering vehicles at night, one of stealing and one of failing to correctly dispose a needle or syringe.

He did not enter a plea.

The court was told Mr Scott had gone through a relationship breakdown two weeks before his arrest, which triggered a drug relapse and allegedly led him to break into several cars and steal debit cards.

Eumundi police told the Sunshine Coast Daily prior to Mr Scott’s court appearance that he allegedly used the debit cards to purchase vapes, cigarettes and instant scratch-its around the Tewantin and Nambour areas.

He bought $900 worth of the items, the court was told.

Police were able to easily track down Mr Scott, however, after he was allegedly caught on CCTV breaking into several cars.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said Mr Scott was allegedly “caught red handed” with the stolen property.

He then allegedly made full admissions to his offending, the court was told.

Police prosecutor Mick Ruddiman said police held concerns Mr Scott would not appear in future court appearances should he be given bail, considering the court did not know of a fixed address.

The court was told Mr Scott was nearing the end of a two-year suspended sentence for violence from 2020, with defence lawyer Michael Robinson adding his client had “stayed out of trouble for almost two years”.

Mr McLaughlin granted Mr Scott bail, and he will return to Maroochydore Magistrates Court on December 13, 2022.
