Yerang “Vanessa” Kwon sentenced for attack on roommate

Read how a 21-year-old business student, angry about the use of her cutlery, viciously attacked and threatened to kill her Maroochydore roommate.

Serious assault, Noosa

A cutlery quarrel led a 21-year business student to grab her roommate by the throat and threatened to kill her during an aggressive assault.

Yerang “Vanessa” Kwon was placed on a $1000 good behaviour bond for 12 months after she pleaded guilty to assaulting her female roommate on December 2 in Maroochydore.

Police prosecutor James Allen told Maroochydore Magistrates Court Kwon had confronted the woman about the use of her cutlery before the argument took a violent turn.

Mr Allen said Kwon had been holding the woman’s bedroom door open when she stormed in.

“ … (Kwon) pushed the victim into the bedroom wall, grabbed the victim by the throat and held her by the throat for a short time,” he said.

“ … (She) then grabbed the victim by the shirt and continued to force her against the wall.”

The female roommate was able to call out to another resident who helped stop the physical assault.

Mr Allen said Kwon threatened to kill the victim several times before police arrived and saw red marks around the victim’s throat.

“She (Kwon) told police it was her fault and she shouldn't have touched the victim,” he said.

Duty lawyer Michael Robinson told Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist the 21-year-old had since moved to Brisbane and was working and studying in the city.

Mr Robinson said Kwon regretted the incident, showed remorse and had an otherwise good character.

He asked for the Fortitude Valley resident to be placed on a good behaviour bond.

Mr Stjernqvist agreed a good behaviour bond was appropriate.

A criminal conviction wasn’t recorded.
