A Queensland grandma has been detained in South America accused of drug smuggling.
Sunshine Coast woman Veronica Watson is in the Santana Women’s Penitentiary in São Paulo, Brazil, after being arrested on December 1 allegedly attempting to leave the country with 1483g of cocaine in a secret compartment of her suitcase.
Ms Watson’s daughter, Sam Watson, said her mother had travelled to Brazil after falling
victim to an internet scam.
“It doesn’t feel real,” Sam Watson told Channel 7.
“I think she’s innocent because she’s always been against crime and drugs.”
Ms Watson’s partner Stephen claims she had told him she needed to travel to Brazil to sign some documents.
In a statement to The Sunday Mail, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was providing assistance to Ms Watson.
