A 32-year-old Caloundra cleaner found herself behind bars on remand after she forged a medical certificate during a half-baked plan to get out of several bail breaches.

Australia's growing drug crisis

A 32-year-old Caloundra mum spent months in custody on remand after she tried to fool police with a fake medical certificate in a half-brained attempt to get out of several bail breaches.

Samantha Louise Stanley received jail but was given immediate parole after she forged a medical certificate to explain three breaches of bail in January last year.

Maroochydore District Court heard on January 28, 2022 that the 32-year-old cleaner had failed to report for bail in Caloundra on January 14, 19, 21, 2021.

Crown prosecutor Sanaz Masoumi said Stanley had forged a medical certificate from her doctor in Buderim which said she was unfit to report.

Ms Masoumi told the court Stanley then gave the fake document to Caloundra Police in an attempt to pervert the course of justice.

The court heard police descended on Stanley’s home on February 13, 2021 after discovering the document was forged however she was nowhere to be found.

Ms Masoumi said Stanley refused to return to the property when contacted by police, with her forged document then found during a search of the home.

Stanley was then arrested on April 14 2021 and remanded into custody after two failed bail applications.

Defence barrister Tracy Thorpe told the court Stanley had been battling bouts of drug addiction since 2014 and would work as a commercial cleaner following her stint in jail.

Judge Glen Cash told the 32-year-old mother that drugs were obviously a problem for her.

“You’re 32 and you’ve been abusing drugs for some years, you would already know friends of yours who have killed themselves through the abuse of drugs,” Judge Cash said.

“Don’t do that to yourself, all right?”

Stanley pleaded guilty to forging and uttering a document and attempting to pervert the course of justice and was sentenced to six months’ jail.

She was given immediate parole, with 106 days of pre sentence custody given as time served.

Convictions were recorded.
