An 18-year-old Coolum Beach man who police allege severely injured an Alexandra Headland man in a one punch attack on Ocean St has failed to have his name suppressed in court.
Police charged Riley Filip Cantarella with grievous bodily harm after he allegedly attacked Joel Goddard in Maroochydore’s Safe Night Precinct about 1.50am on October 15.
Police allege the 20-year-old victim was severely injured by Mr Cantarella and was rushed by paramedics to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
He was later taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment.
Investigations led officers to charge the teenager, who was represented by defence solicitor Anna Smith on November 4.
Ms Smith made an application for the suppression of Mr Cantarella‘s name within media publications because of fears it could jeopardise his sister’s job prospects.
Police prosecutor Michael Quirk said it wasn‘t a “good enough reason” to suppress his name.
“The (alleged) assault is a particularly bad one, in my submission the court would need more than simply the sister applying for a job,” Mr Quirk said.
The application to suppress Mr Cantarella’s name was denied by Magistrate Raelene Ellis.
Ms Smith asked for a full brief of evidence to be produced and the matter was adjourned to committal court on December 16.
Mr Cantarella was supported by his family as he left court, shielding his face from the media with a black cap.
