A Glass House Mountains drug dealer has admitted to threatening to shoot a group of people with a sawn off shotgun before firing it as they fled.
Maroochydore District Court heard on Monday Reyce Kyle Beverstock pointed the loaded weapon at the group when they followed his neighbour to his Sunshine Coast hinterland home.
The frightening details of the exchange were heard following his pleas of guilty to 32 charges including 19 counts of supplying a dangerous drug, three of possessing dangerous drugs and one of going armed to cause fear.
Crown prosecutor Erica Zammit said the 29-year-old’s drug crimes came to light after the disturbing weapon incident on March 31, 2023.
The court heard a group of mates in a convoy of two cars were driving through the Glass House Mountains when another vehicle pulled out in front of them, nearly causing a crash.
Ms Zammit said the cars followed the vehicle to Beverstock’s Glass House Mountains home and one of the passengers asked the driver if he was drinking or if he was “on the pipe”.
Beverstock walked outside to the group while wielding a sawn off shotgun and pointed the gun at them with his finger on the trigger.
The Crown prosecutor said the 29-year-old told the group: “people are gonna (sic) die and if you don’t get out of here, I’ll shoot one of you and you’ll die tonight”.
Ms Zammit said one of the men was about a metre away from the 29-year-old when the firearm was pointed at him.
The two cars fled in fear and, as they drove off, they could hear Beverstock firing the shotgun. There was no suggestion it was shot in the direction of anyone.
Police were called and Beverstock’s home was raided which uncovered the 29-year-old’s drug dealing side hustle, where detectives came across 19 drug supplies of mainly marijuana, but also cocaine or MDMA.
Most of the drug deals were street level and some included offers and not actual supplies, which stretched from 2021 to 2023 to six different customers.
This was bar one supply where Ms Zammit said Beverstock supplied 7g of cocaine. He was also found to be growing his own marijuana, with 508g of loose cannabis found partnered with small amounts of MDMA, prescription drugs, ketamine, drug items, $2235 in cash and 700 rounds of ammunition. The gun was not found at the time.
Defence barrister Gavin Webber stated his client was aware he could be going to jail which “terrifies him” and hoped for a sentence which meant he would not serve actual time.
Mr Webber said the pest control worker’s original intentions was to protect his neighbour. This prompted Judge Cash to say most members of the community would instead call the police.
His solicitor said the Proserpine-born father was the main breadwinner for his family, who would suffer if he went inside.
Mr Webber told the court Beverstock was prescribed medical marijuana but only grew it and sold it due to its expensive price from the chemist.
He also did not use harder drugs and submitted there was “hope” for the Glass House Mountains man.
Judge Cash plainly told Beverstock no right-thinking member of the community could condone his behaviour with the shotgun, and believed the exterminator needed to serve a stint in custody to denounce his crime.
The 29-year-old was jailed for two years but will be released onto parole on August 10 after serving six months.
