A 22-year-old Brisbane university student has lost his bid for freedom over accusations of gang violence amid a savage Sunshine Coast home invasion, a court has been told.

Reef Jamison Ebb appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court via videolink from the Brisbane Watch House on June 27, where he made an application for bail.

The court was told Mr Ebb, along with a group of other people, allegedly drove his own car to a Maroochydore home from Brisbane on June 6, allegedly looking for someone who allegedly fled the property through the backyard.

Mr Ebb and the others allegedly stormed the house and assaulted a 50-year-old father of two. His teenage sons were allegedly told to hide in the bedroom before their father was attacked, the court was told.

The group then drove back to Brisbane and then west toward Ipswich, the court was told.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said it appeared Mr Ebb was in a gang with the other people allegedly involved. Mr Ebb is the only one of the group charged, the court was told.

Police prosecutor Leonie Scott said the car was tracked travelling from Brisbane, but Mr Ebb lied to police and said his car had been stolen.

Lawyer Luke Bull said Mr Ebb had never been in custody before and had recently completed a 12-month probation order.

His client was a sport and exercise science student at the University of Queensland and is halfway through completing his bachelor’s degree, Mr Bull said. He works at a hospitality venue in Newmarket part-time.

Mr Bull told the court Mr Ebb’s objection to bail stated he had a previous offence tied to other people of Sudanese descent.

Mr Ebb was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in company, enter dwelling with intent, robbery with actual violence, unlawful wounding and wilful damage. He has not entered a plea.

His bail was denied and he was remanded in custody.

He will return to court on August 18 for committal mention.
