A 28-year-old Dicky Beach man has learnt his fate in court after the gory stabbing of a stranger in his scrotum.

Maroochydore District Court heard details of Nathan Anthony Yeates’ spate of violent crimes; including when he pulled an 8cm knuckleduster flick knife on the man during a fight in Landsborough.

Crown prosecutor Joana Dias said Yeates, who was between the ages of 26 and 27 at the time, had punched a complete stranger twice in the face “without warning” after the victim approached him and another man at Landsborough on February 19, 2022.

The victim stumbled backwards as Yeates lunged and punched him in the head again before he pulled the weapon and stabbed his right bicep, leaving a 3cm stab wound.

Ms Dias said Yeates “didn’t stop there” and stabbed him twice more on the groin, causing a 1.5cm-wide wound to his scrotum.

Ms Dias said Yeates “laughed like a nutter” after the attack.

Witnesses called police, but Yeates followed the victim as he retreated, yelling “do you want more” and “I’m going to kill you”.

Ms Dias said he then stabbed a screen door five times, walked away, then returned to stab the door twice more, before fleeing the scene.

The court was told Yeates was on bail at the time for knocking a man unconscious at the Mundubbera Hotel on November 20, 2021, and for failing to show up at the Caloundra police station a week later to give his details.

He later told police it was “that time of year” and was busy with work and unable to get to the station.

Yeates was then found at Dicky Beach on March 3, 2022, where he was caught with 15g of weed, two bongs and a grinder.

Ms Dias said Yeates told police he had drank a carton of beer and had several prescription pills prior to the stabbing and claimed the victim’s girlfriend had “made a beeline for him” and the victim had approached him threateningly.

Yeates claimed to have thrown a beer bottle at him in self defence, and the victim was stabbed as he kept coming. However, this was not accepted.

Ms Dias said Yeates had begun seeing a psych since the event, where it was noted he had tried to defend his actions. It was also noted Yeates had substance abuse issues, which were the root of his criminal offending.

He had attended 12 sessions of a drug program, Ms Dias said, was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety and was on antipsychotic medications.

Defence barrister Carmen De Marco said her client had agreed to the facts shared in court.

She said this was his first time in custody and he had undergone “significant” rehabilitation while behind bars.

Upon release, he hoped to return to work as a concreter.

“He wants to make himself a beneficial and useful member of the community again,” Ms De Marco said.

Yeates pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm, wounding, wilful damage, contravening a direction or requirement by police, possessing a dangerous drug, possessing drug utensils, and possessing a weapon.

He was sentenced to two years and nine months behind bars, but was immediately released on parole with the 11 months and 17 days he spent in presentence custody declared time served.

A conviction was recorded.
