Police have charged a man following a bizarre alleged robbery where he apologised to a young newsagent attendant as he robbed the store in Mooloolaba.

Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch detectives arrested a 47-year-old Mooloolaba man after he allegedly robbed the newsagency in Mantra Sirocco in Mooloolaba.

Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield said the man allegedly demanded money while he brandished a long bladed knife, similar to a fishing knife.

The female attendant in her 20s handed over a sum of cash to the man.

Police allege he fled to an undercover car park beneath the shop and left in a vehicle.

Sergeant Mansfield said there’s a suggestion the man was “apologetic” and “desperate” when he allegedly robbed the newsagent with a weapon.

“He said words to the effect of ‘I’m sorry I just need to do this’,” he said.

The man was charged with armed robbery and stealing and will appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on July 22, 2022.
