A man who allegedly grabbed his daughter by the throat before punching her has made a bid for freedom before a magistrate in court.

The Sunshine Coast man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared on video link in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on August 22 and was represented by duty lawyer David Crews who made a bail application on his behalf.

The man has been charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence.) No plea has been entered.

Magistrate Rod Madsen read out to the court the man had allegedly accused his 13-year-old daughter of hacking into his accounts after she returned from the park on the day of the incident.

The alleged victim had moved past him and gone to the bathroom but her father followed, the court heard.

He had allegedly grabbed the girl by the throat and held on for about 15 seconds before he took her by the jaw and then punched her in the arm twice.

The court heard he then finished the assault by allegedly headbutting the girl.

The girl’s sibling witnessed the alleged incident.

Police prosecutor Mark Burrell said it was a serious alleged offence and there is a chance of imprisonment if he were found guilty.

The mother and child currently have a domestic violence order in place against the man.

Mr Crews told the court the alleged offences had actually occurred 12 months ago and a warrant had been issued for his arrest when police could not find him.

However the man had since been before court for other matters, meaning “they could find him” after all, Mr Crews said.

“So whatever reason they have charged him now in a failed attempt to keep him in custody,” he said.

Mr Madsen refused bail and adjourned the matter to September 19.
