A Currimundi man was found with a loaded sawn off shotgun in his car after he led police on a high speed pursuit throughout Marcoola, reaching speeds of up to 150km/h.

Dylan Mark Cheers, 24, was given immediate parole and lost his driver’s licence for two and a half years in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The court heard the labourer reached speeds of 120km/h in an 80km/h zone through Marcoola before heading onto David Low Way in Coolum Beach, crossing double white lines while fleeing police on April 15, 2020.

The court heard Cheers continued to overtake cars and caused several near miss crashes as he accelerated, speeding in excess of 150km/h.

Cheers came to a sudden halt thanks to tyre spikes and was finally arrested.

Police prosecutor Mark Burrell said police uncovered a loaded sawn off shotgun inside his Volkswagen Passat on the same day.

Court documents say police charged Cheers with driving while adversely affected due to his behaviour however he was not formally drug tested.

Senior Constable Burrell told the court Cheers had racked up charges of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and receiving tainted property from March 8-12, 2020.

Defence lawyer Christopher Lumme said Cheers had spent 702 days in custody after his arrest and had been sentenced in the Maroochydore District Court on other charges.

Mr Lumme said since his release Cheers had taken up work as a labourer and was on the path of rehabilitating after his stint in jail.

Cheers pleaded guilty to eight charges including evading police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected and unlawful possession of a weapon and was sentenced to 18 months’ jail.

Convictions were recorded.
