A Buderim concreter has admitted to attacking a prison guard after fighting with his cellmate at a notorious Brisbane jail.

This unprovoked attack by Dwane Daniel Morgan on a corrections officer was only one of 15 offences he pleaded guilty to in Maroochydore Magistrates Court last week, which included affray, burglary, serious assaulting a correctional officer and serious assaulting police.

Police prosecutor Pedau Grabbe said some of Morgan’s crimes included kicking a police officer in the leg and being involved in a wild affray involving a knife and bat.

Sergeant Grabbe said the 36-year-old also admitted to punching a corrective service officer on the left side of his face at the Brisbane Correctional Centre at Wacol on October 24 last year.

The court heard the prison guard suffered swelling to his cheek and jaw and had bleeding inside his mouth. He was also left with a concussion.

She told the court Morgan had a serious violent history and asked for more jail time.

Defence solicitor Luke Bull said the Buderim man spent about five months in custody following his arrest and attributed Morgan’s spiral to a loss of accommodation and work which resulted in a relapse into drugs.

The court heard Morgan was released on parole in 2021 and had been living in the community for three years, where he worked as a concreter and lived with his brother in the Glass House Mountains.

The pair had a falling out according to Mr Bull in April last year and the 36-year-old moved out. Mr Bull said Morgan moved in with a friend which is where his drug use restarted.

Morgan’s solicitor said the 36-year-old was involved in a fight with his cellmate at the Wacol jail and when he was taken away, the Buderim man took his anger out on one of the officers.

Mr Bull said he had since apologised to the prison guard and was remorseful. Morgan was placed in the detention unit for almost two months and was subjected to 24 hour lockdowns.

The court was told Morgan patched up things with his brother and would live with him when he was released from jail.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist jailed Morgan for 18 months however with time served, declared his parole release date as of Friday.
