A Bells Creek university student subjected a woman to a flurry of punches and pulled her hair during a group home invasion over a social media post, a court has heard.

Demi Elizabeth Splatt, 25, broke into the home of a Currimundi woman with two accomplices on March 25, 2021 where the victim was assaulted before she had her phone stolen.

Maroochydore District Court heard the violent burglary and robbery erupted over a social media post published by the victim which allegedly showed one of Splatt’s relatives using cocaine.

The court was told this was posted after another party published personal information about the victim online.

Crown prosecutor Elle Bolam said Splatt and two co-accused arrived about 5.30pm on the day of the home invasion and pushed their way into the victim’s property.

Chaos ensued when Splatt grabbed the woman’s hair while the victim was on the ground and punched her in the face repeatedly along with another co-accused.

Ms Bolam said the victim ran outside and screamed out to her neighbours to help but was grabbed and dragged back inside by one of the co-accused.

“Stop her from yelling, cover her mouth, drag her back inside,” Ms Bolam quoted one of the co-accused.

The court heard the trio grabbed the victim’s phone and tried to escape in a car but the victim quickly followed.

Ms Bolam said the victim tried to retrieve her phone from one of the co-accused, but Splatt punched her in the back of the head and hit her with a soft shoe, before they drove off.

Splatt was then arrested on March 30, 2021.

Defence barrister Kelvin Pearson told the court the victim suffered no serious injuries and said Splatt “overreacted” after her relative went missing following the social media post, fearing the worst.

Mr Pearson said Splatt had become a homeowner and hoped to move to Victoria to be closer with family.

Judge Glen Cash labelled the robbery as equally “stupid and serious”.

The Bells Creek woman pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault, robbery and burglary and was sentenced to two years’ probation.

No conviction was recorded.
