A serial thief with a life ban from Sunshine Plaza’s latest exploits at a Noosa shopping centre have been exposed as the father-of-one faces court.
Brody Joshua Seib, 21, appeared in the Maroochydore District Court on Monday, October 16, where he pleaded guilty to attempted robbery, stealing and obstructing police.
The court was told the charges related to incidents at Noosa Civic on February 24, 2023.
Crown prosecutor Nicola Hamilton told the court Seib attempted to steal a suitcase from a Strandbags store before making off with a Guess bag.
“The defendant entered the store, (the store attendant) approached him and offered her assistance, he removed a suitcase from the shelf valued at $270,” Ms Hamilton said.
“The complainant told him she didn’t think it was on sale and went to take it to scan for a price check, (and) as she turned to take the bag the defendant kept a hold of the handle and attempted to rip it from her grasp.”
Ms Hamilton told the court Seib pushed the suitcase back into the store attendant, which caused her to fall backwards.
“The defendant ran, apologising to the complainant as he left, but took a Guess branded toiletries bag valued at $90 from a display shelf,” Ms Hamilton said.
The court was told Seib had an extensive criminal history, mostly consisting of similar offences, as well as a lifetime ban from Sunshine Plaza for stealing.
Barrister David Crews told the court Seib had previously worked as cleaner and was hoping to get work in property maintenance.
District Court judge Gary Long described the 21-year-old’s criminal history as “significant”.
“While you remain quite young, you’re 21 years of age, as an adult nevertheless you have attracted for yourself a significant criminal history,” Mr Long said.
Mr Long told Seib he could expect to spend more time behind bars if he continues offending.
“You need to understand that continued offending and resistance to seeking to do something about whatever it is the underlies the offending is simply going to lead to you spending longer and longer periods in jail,” Mr Long said.
Seib was sentenced to 15 months’ prison and released on immediate parole.
