Basketball player Duom Dawam charged with driving under the influence of liquor

A swashbuckling “power forward” basketball player who was previously signed for the Sunshine Coast Phoenix has been charged with drink driving in a busy suburban street.

A semi-professional basketball player who was previously contracted to the Sunshine Coast Phoenix has been charged with high-range drink driving.

Police will allege in court Duom Dawam, 28, was caught drink driving after he was breath tested by police along Burnett St at Buderim on November 24.

Dawam was charged with driving under the influence of liquor and faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday, where his matter was adjourned to next year so he could obtain legal advice.

Sunshine Coast Phoenix announced the signing of the “versatile big man” earlier this year after the 208cm “power forward” spent the 2023 season playing in the Indonesian Basketball League.

In its announcement, the NBL1 club said Dawam averaged 12.4 points and 10 rebounds per game that year.

Dawam also spent two seasons with Mount Gambier and Albury Wodonga in the NBL1 league.

Following his signing, Dawam was described as a player who had the ability to “score on all three levels”, a tremendous rebounder, and an “elite” rim protector.

He played 17 games over the 2024 season while contracted for the Sunshine Coast team.

A Sunshine Coast Basketball Association spokesman said Dawam was a member of its NBL1 program in 2024, however was not currently under contract with their organisation.

“[Dawam] at this point has not been offered a contract for the 2025 season,” the spokesman said.

“SCBA wishes Duom all the best and will work with him moving forward to assist him in any way possible.”

Dawam did not enter a plea.
