Man dead after serious crash on Bruce Hwy, Nirimba

Police are investigating after a horror crash on the Bruce Hwy has left a man dead and a woman seriously injured with traffic quickly turning to chaos.

An elderly man has died after a crash on the Bruce Hwy at Nirimba, while a woman is in hospital fighting for her life.

Emergency crews responded to the crash between Roys Rd and Steve Irwin Way, about 11.20am today, to reports a Mazda ute towing a caravan had veered across multiple lanes and collided with a Toyota ute before going down an embankment.

The forensic crash unit is investigating after a man in his 80s, the driver of the Mazda ute, died at the scene.

A passenger, a woman in her 60s, was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman earlier said paramedics treated three people at the crash, with two in a life-threatening condition.

A third person, the driver of the Toyota ute, was not physically injured.

Reports from social media claim a ute and the caravan became “tangled up” on the road before the crash.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the car had “slipped” off the road, ran down and embankment and ended up in a creek.

Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident are urged to contact police.

Police said one northbound lane of the Bruce Hwy was closed, and the other was experiencing heavy delays.

At one stage, traffic had banked up for more than 4km south of the scene in the northbound lane.

People on social media were also reporting Steve Irwin Way and other detours were beginning to back up.
