Sunshine Coast school formals: Mullet trend stands out
As the recent run of school formals have shown the mullet is making a resurgence in the world of fashion and it’s probably time we all embrace it.
Opinion
Don't miss out on the headlines from Opinion. Followed categories will be added to My News.
I’ll preface this with the fact that I have the fashion nous of a plank of wood so am wildly unqualified to comment on trends.
But the recent run of formal galleries certainly served up some absolute treats.
Given my staple haircut for about the last 20 years has consisted of ‘take a heap off the top and short around the back and sides’ again I am completely out of my depth here but the hairstyles have blown me away.
In the space of about 15 years there’s clearly been a pretty dramatic shift in what’s kosher up top.
The mullet has well and truly stormed back into contention as the hairstyle of choice.
Not so long ago the mullet was considered a fair indicator you were either highly unemployable or about to embark on some sort of indictable offence.
Now, fuelled by a bevy of sporting heroes with no need to appear semi-presentable to hold down a day job, the mullet has had new life breathed into it.
These are young people with their whole lives ahead of them, many just entering the workforce, who have thrown all caution to the wind when it comes to first impressions and are letting the party at the back run long into the night.
I gotta say, I’m all for it.
Young people these days have enough to worry about with the mess that is social media without being concerned whether their hairstyle is going to see them typecast.
I don’t think it matters whether you’re running a classic business cut upfront and some flowing locks at the back or whether your hair is blue, pink, purple or brown.
Character is the main thing that matters.
But there’s a fine line between larrikin and full eshay mode.
A mullet coupled with a turtleneck, well that’s starting to veer into some fairly ‘unfriendly behaviour at a shopping centre’ vibes, so caution needs to be taken.
Mullets aside, I noticed a few other trends.
What’s the go with not wearing socks?
I could think of nothing worse than running barefoot in a pair of dress shoes.
It’s one of those desperate plays you make to get back into the surf club after the dress code kicks in, but not a move undertaken by choice surely?
There was a fair bit of gold chain action going on too, some of those necklaces looked more like winch cables, with enough jewellery to put my daughter to shame during a dress up.
I write this donned in what can only be described as ‘less than smart casual dad’ wear complete with Lowes shirt, the same pair of boots I’ll wear literally into the ground and a hairstyle that is as lifeless as my cricket career, so these are nothing more than the musings of a pleb.
Best of luck class of 2021, you’re graduating at a very bizarre time in history, so keep the mullets flowing!
