Scott Hillier: Which fish to catch as weekend gets windy

Local fishing icon Scott Hillier is back with his latest tips on where to fish and what to catch this weekend. SEE THE PICTURES

Looks like the wind will arrive just in time for the weekend keeping those keen to chase a few fish back in the rivers, creeks and open beaches.

Friday looks like boaties will get a chance to sneak out before the conditions change and with the full moon on the way and great run in the tide, fishing should be pretty good.

Snapper, pearl perch and amberjack seem to be the most popular species offshore.

Snapper is caught on most inshore reefs by those floating whole baits of pilchards and squid into a good berley trail, with early morning and late afternoon twilight being the best bite time.

Back inshore and the rivers and creeks are holding good numbers of jewfish at the moment with Noosa and Maroochy by far being the pick of the spots.

The best results are coming from those casting 5 inch soft plastics with a light jig head weight.

The prime bite time is when the tide slackens off, either the top or bottom, as the fish get active and look for a feed.

Plenty of bream around as well in the rivers and in the gutters on the open beaches, strip baits and peeled prawns are best.

In the rivers when the tide just starts to run in, the smaller trevally are feeding well.

Try using small surface poppers, soft plastics or even metal slugs.

Hot spots have been Woods bay, Chambers Island and Mooloolah River.

Those soaking live yabbies up on the flats during the run in tide are seeing some good quality whiting.

Just a handful of mud crabs have been reported way up the tops of the rivers.
