NO doubt some of your readers are thinking that young women who are sexually assaulted while under the influence of drink or drugs (Daily, May 4) have been foolish to put themselves in such a situation.
Perhaps they are "asking for it”, to use old terminology.
It's of major concern that young women now drink to excess as much as young men have always done.
It's one of those truly regrettable rites of passage for the young.
But this alarming trend does not make it OK to take advantage of the young women in question.
Imagine if it were a drunk young man who was the victim of sexual assault.
Unthinkable?
Not at all.
Vulnerable boys and young men are also attacked in this way.
I suspect they are even less likely to speak up about it than girls are, such is the extent of their shame.
Would any man think it OK for his best mate to be sexually assaulted while passed out?
Of course not.
Such are the double standards which still prevail in our society.
There is nothing young people crave more than acceptance by their peers.
How wonderful would it be to see young leaders stand up and speak out against the mindset that sees moderation as boring yet punishes those who succumb to the pressure.
Let's work to promote care and respect, one for the other and avoid judging.
