Nickels and Dimes Tewantin opening revealed

The owner of the Noosa region’s new “old experience” bar is keeping it simple, relying on word of mouth as advertisement and keeping the venue free of pokies and TVs.

Tewantin’s new American-style bar is going back to basics, relying on word of mouth as advertisement instead of social media and allowing more people to sit at the bar.

Peregian Beach resident and bar owner Liam Martin said the idea behind the new bar, Nickels and Dimes, was to bring back the social aspects of bars without the pokies or a focus on TV screens.

“In Australia, we’ve gentrified a lot of the bars and done them up, you can’t even sit at the bar, you get a drink and they tell you to go away basically,” Mr Martin said.

“It is not very welcoming or gives that local bar feel, so there is 15 seats at this bar and then in front of the window there is another 10.

“It is so you can interact with the bartender, it’s bringing the old experience back to Australia.”

Mr Martin, who owns two bars in San Francisco, said the name of the bar came about because he and late friend, who was also a bartender, were often referred to as Nickels and Dimes.

“I thought the next bar I did, as a tribute to him, I’d call it Nickels and Dimes,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin said customers will notice a number of quirky details throughout the venue including recycled streets lights from America.

“It is an eclectic mix of everything,” he said.

“I’ve been opening the windows from midday everyday now for about three months, so when people come past they can look in, I’ve spent whole afternoons talking to locals and giving tours,” Mr Martin said, adding that he wouldn’t use any social media.

“I’ve got to know hundreds of people over the last three months, it will always just say “bar” out the front, I will never put my name on it.”

Mr Martin said the 70-seat venue will also feature one item from the drinks menu popular with customers to the San Francisco bars.

“Our Bloody Mary’s are pretty famous, so we will be doing that for the Sunday session,” Mr Martin said.

Nickels and Dimes is located at 115 Poinciana Ave, Tewantin and will open Saturday, December 9.
