A Sunshine Coast father and son have received jail terms for their roles in a botched car theft which resulted in a woman being assaulted.

Tarik James Tyson, 24, and Ronald James Tyson, 45, stood together in the Maroochydore District Court dock on Monday and admitted to their involvement in the ill-fated attempted car theft in Beerwah on April 30 last year.

The court was told on Monday the Beerwah men, who were both on parole, set upon the victim’s car about 3.40pm in the suburban street where they used violence to try and flee when they were caught “red handed” in the vehicle.

Judge Bradley Farr said the pair tipped off the vehicle’s owner when one of them closed one of the car doors.

They were both confronted by him and others living in the area, including a woman resident who went to help.

It was here, crown prosecutor Alex Stark said Ronald Tyson punched the woman to try and affect their escape, while Tarik Tyson was in company.

The court heard people nearby were luckily able to overpower the pair and detained them until police arrived.

Mr Stark said while they were both apprehended, the 45-year-old father told the woman he was “coming back” for them.

“No doubt it was terrifying for all concerned,” Judge Farr said.

The pair was taken into custody and spent 17 months on remand until their appearance in court on Monday, where the pair both pleaded guilty to assault while in company, unlawful entry of a vehicle with violence in company and receiving tainted property.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to an additional charge of possessing a dangerous drug.

Mr Stark said the pair had lengthy criminal histories, and cited the father’s record as “deplorable” from a previous court decision.

The crown prosecutor said it appeared the older Tyson acted as the “reverse” of a mature parental influence, by being involved in the brazen daylight crime with his son.

Defence barrister James Feely, who acted for Tarik Tyson, said the 24-year-old was remorseful for his conduct and regretted his action.

Mr Feely said the Beerwah man still had prospects for rehabilitation despite his criminal history and had job interviews following his release from jail.

Barrister Remy Kurz, who represented Ronald Tyson, said the 45-year-old completed some alcohol rehabilitation in custody and tendered psychiatric reports that showed a link between his drug addiction and prejudicial upbringing.

Mr Kurz said the father also regretted his involvement and recognised he had been an absent father and partner due to his criminal history and drug dependence.

Judge Farr said ultimately it was up to both men to change their ways, especially for Tarik Tyson, if he did not want to end up like his dad.

The District Court later labelled the 45-year-old as a “menace to society”.

Tarik Tyson was jailed for nine months with parole eligibility set at Monday, while Ronald Tyson was sentenced to 12 months’ jail.

Both men were granted immediate parole eligibility.
