A Sunshine Coast business owner turned Trumpet of Patriots candidate has announced he will challenge opposition leader Peter Dutton’s seat, despite being on bail for serious weapons and stalking charges.

Michael Norman Jessop, who ran as an independent in Caloundra in the state election last year, will represent Clive Palmer’s Trumpet of Patriots party in the Brisbane seat of Dickson in the upcoming federal election.

Mr Jessop, 70, said he would fight a number of serious charges but could not discuss the matter any further, stating “unconditional discharges is all I’m going for basically”.

“All I suffice to say is there is absolutely no basis for any of these allegations,” Mr Jessop said.

Police allege Mr Jessop stalked a man and tried to place a mobile device in his car.

Mr Jessop was allegedly found at a Bli Bli property with a hammer, samurai sword, compound bow, body armour, a cadaver bag, shovel, axe, rope and duct tape.

Court documents previously seen by this publication stated Mr Jessop allegedly covered his face with a mask and placed duct tape over a CCTV camera.

The remaining charges including stalking, possessing weapons and wilful damage have been committed to the district court.

The boat builder said his main motivation for running in the federal electorate was to combat “political oppression”, comparing his political journey to that of former US president, Abraham Lincoln.

“This is my eighth time and that is the number of times Abraham Lincoln had to run before he got into office at all and we are very optimistic about this election,” Mr Jessop said.

Trumpet of Patriots has been contacted by this publication for comment.
