Matthew Bryan in court for speeding after Bli Bli fatal crash on Finland Rd

An aspiring Sunshine Coast soldier had a major wakeup call when his friend was killed on the same road where he was filmed speeding 90km/h over the limit.

An aspiring soldier who drove at 90km/h over the speed limit lost his friend in a horror crash on the same road just days later.

Matthew Allan Bryan, 18, was filmed by his passenger reaching speeds of 150km/h in a 60km/h zone on Finland Rd, Bli Bli on June 5, 2022.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard how just four days later on June 9, a friend of Bryan’s was killed in a crash on the exact same road.

Police prosecutor Stephen Potter said police seized Bryan’s phone as part of the investigation for the fatal crash and found the videos of him excessively speeding.

The passenger could be heard in the video saying “Go Matt” as he reached speeds of 90km/h over the limit.

The court heard the road was residential with driveways and narrow road shoulders.

Bryan made full admissions to police about his driving and stated he had two passengers at the time.

Magistrate Raelene Ellis said Bryan was “extremely lucky” his actions didn’t result in someone’s death.

“That would have ruined that family’s life but ruined your life and your entire family,” Magistrate Ellis said.

“Your method of driving of driving was nothing short of absolute and utter stupidity.”

Defence solicitor Adrian Hawkes said Bryan had a strong family support system and they had punished him by taking away his car.

“Mr Bryan appreciates that these laws are there to protect young men like himself and the fellow that died,” Mr Hawkes said.

Magistrate Raelene Ellis ordered Bryan be on probation for seven months and did not record a conviction for the charge of dangerous operation to which he pleaded guilty.
