Massive new hotel, retail and car park development for tourist strip

BREAKING: A major new development featuring a car park with 1000 spaces, a supermarket, shopping centre, hotel, bar and aged care centre has been revealed.

DETAILS of a major Coast carpark, retail and hotel development have been revealed.

About 700 new spaces will be controlled by Sunshine Coast Council should a development application for the Brisbane Road carpark be approved.

A council spokeswoman said the council was working with developer Abacus Funds Management to minimise the loss of carpark bays and disruption during the proposed redevelopment.

"Therefore, council has provided consent to enable the lodgement of a development application for the Brisbane Road Carpark Project," the spokeswoman said.

"This will ensure that if the development application is successful, construction will not be delayed, so the first stage of underground car parks can be completed as a high priority."

The application, lodged late on Friday, also includes a full-line supermarket, shopping centre, hotel, bar, indoor sport and recreation complex and an aged care facility.

It features about 1000 car spaces altogether, but about 300 of those will be attached to the residential component of the development.

The spokeswoman said the council had appointed an independent assessment team to consider the application in the interest of transparency.

"It is anticipated that construction will start in early February, however there are still a number of milestones to achieve, including the development application approval."

Cr John Connolly said the application had come after lengthy negotiations with the developer.

He said there had been talk of a major development on the site for decades.

"It has virtually been 30 years in the making this project," Cr Connolly said.

He said a paid parking arrangement for the council controlled carparks would be discussed with business representative groups in Mooloolaba.

"There will be some form of paid parking and it is to be decided what (that will be ) yet."

He said the council was continuing its work to widen Brisbane Road to accommodate traffic flow in and out of Mooloolaba.
