Man jailed for horrific home invasion names fake co-accused

A MAN jailed for a terrifying midnight home invasion, has been accused of “throwing” police the name of a fake co-accused to protect himself.

A MAN jailed for a terrifying midnight home invasion, has been accused of "throwing" police the name of a fake co-accused to protect himself and the real offender.

The suggestion was made by defence counsel Steve Courtney, who represents former Caloundra man Jason Neil Poultney, 32, who is on trial in the Maroochydore District Court for the September 2012 crime.

Poultney is accused of being the organiser of the home invasion, in which a Caloundra woman woke to find a balaclava-clad man standing over her bed, holding a knife against her neck and demanding drugs and cash.

It's claimed he and a co-offender had awaited the return from work of the woman's son, so they could take his keys to enter the unit.

An earlier trial in February was aborted when Poultney claimed he was at work at a Caloundra restaurant on the night of the offence.

For his part in the invasion, Luke Aaron Farrell, of Crestmead near Beaudesert, was jailed for four months earlier this year; a sentence the court heard was reduced by at least six months in return for testimony against Poultney.

On day one of the new trial yesterday, Farrell claimed he had been driven to Caloundra on the pretence of securing cheap "weed", without knowing about the planned home invasion.

However, Mr Courtney claimed he was not "playing the lesser role" in the crime, had lied to protect the real co-offender, and that he "threw" Poultney's name to police to get himself out of trouble and protect his "mates".

Farrell replied all three of Mr Courtney's claims were not true.

The three-day trial continues today.
