It was a match-up of momentum in round three with both sides showing their class and speed out wide, but it was the home side Marsden who came away with a 26-16 victory over Caloundra.

Caloundra came into the clash as massive underdogs, but may have unwittingly unveiled a blueprint to overcoming the might of Marsden, with their carefree style of play causing headaches for the home side in the second half.

But in the end the class of Marsden couldn’t be denied, with Benson Tau diving across off the back of some great set-up work to seal a 10-point win.

Marsden started with promise in the opening 10 minutes, controlling the ball and field possession well which led to an opening try from right winger Bailey Turner.

Five-eight and captain Javon Andrews added the extra two and was involved again shortly after throwing a lovely cut out ball to Turner which helped extend the lead to 12-0.

The home side continued to retain the ball and were happy to attack Caloundra’s right edge as number 14, Quentin Teuila help extend the lead to 16-0 before halftime.

Silly mistakes proved costly for Caloundra in situations to shorten the scoreline as Marsden centre Disharne Tonihi crossed for a runaway try after some fancy footwork on the left edge.

Down by 22 it could’ve been a very different story but Caloundra big man Cooper Clarke hit back for the visitors first before rising star Ellyjah Brive created some spark for a 70m runaway try for left winger Tyler Conquest.

The men in blue continued to roll with momentum as a Marsden mistake under the highball caused Caloundra right winger Keagan Zanchetta to dive over and reduce the deficit to just one try.

Marsden hit back thanks to a nice team try off the back of an inviting scrum feed that saw Benson Tau go himself for a try on the left touchline.

The 2023 minor premiers suffered a late scare thanks to some individual brilliance from Birve but in the end they did enough to record a 10 point victory.

WALTERS CUP

Famliar surroundings proved too much to handle for visiting side Stretton College as Marsden came away commanding 48-4 winners in their round three Walters Cup clash.

An out on the full kick off and an opening set try from Marsden set the unfortunate tone for the visiting Stretton College who found themselves three tries down after the opening 15 minutes.

Stretton found it tough to attack their own line in the opening half but did well to put a stop to Marsden’s try scoring efforts.

Both sides returned for the second half with Marsden leading 14-0 before the home side extended their lead to 24 with 20 minutes remaining.

Stretton College edge back row scored their only try of the match from a bobbled kick before Marsden scored a further five tries to secure a healthy 48-4 victory.

PREVIEW

Marsden SHS will welcome Sunshine Coast-based side Caloundra SHS on Wednesday in a cracking Langer Trophy round three clash.

The visitors will be gunning for their first win of the season while the hosts are set to relish home-ground advantage in a bid to get their season back on track.

The clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV, with the coverage kicking off with the Walters Cup clash between Stretton College and Marsden SHS at 3.15pm.

Following a healthy 26 point victory over Redcliffe SHS in round one, Marsden were their own worst enemy in round two suffering a 24-12 defeat to Wavell SHS.

Head coach Krys Freeman said he knew his side would relish their first home game of the season.

“We’ve got a tough start to the season with three of our first four games away so it’s good to get home and have a good supporting crowd,” he said.

“Caloundra made their mark last season and have already shown growth this year with some quality players and as a well coached side.”

Freeman said he hoped his side could focus on the small victories throughout the game.

“A big focus for us is to be happy with the simple wins this week like a quick play the ball, a repeat set, a strong tackle and so on,” he said.

“I think at the schoolboy level sometimes everyone gets caught up in the big plays or the flashy moments but we need to execute our simple wins and be happy with our energy and effort.”

Caloundra are yet to record a win this season but have been challenging in both contests and are a much stronger outfit compared to 2023.

The Seahawks went down 26-12 to Mabel Park in the opening round before a 20-12 defeat to Keebra Park in week two.

Head coach Toby Poole said his side would be ready for their round three clash.

“Completions are still our biggest issue at the moment, we were at 40 per cent against Mabel Park and dropped below 40 per cent against Keebra Park,” he said.

“Once we get a little bit of ascendancy we make another error which gifts the opposition a chance and we’re just doing too much goal line defence.

“We’re defending well but it’s just too much and I genuinely believe if we can get our completions up around 60 or 70 per cent, the boys can give anyone a good shake.”
