A Noosa rowing club is set to be relocated due to works at Lake MacDonald, despite concerns raised over the alternate site.
The Noosa Council’s planning and environment committee meeting agenda stated the Lake MacDonald Rowing Club would be moved to a new location to allow for works to be completed at Lake MacDonald, a source of SEQ water supply.
The report stated the works were set to begin in the coming years, with the club set to be moved to a section of Lake MacDonald at Hoys Rd.
“The relocation is required due to the Lake Macdonald Improvement Project works to be completed to the dam which is anticipated to be in 5-7 years,” the report stated.
“The club currently operates at the northern side of the lake adjoining Collwood Road where they have an ongoing license to operate with Seqwater.”
The relocation would include providing two shipping containers to store equipment.
According to the report a number of submissions were made to the council regarding concerns over the proposed location.
“The proposed Rowing Club is opposite Darter Park which is overgrown and frequented by homeless people. Local residents clean up the area. The rowing club should be located near the Botanic Garden which already has facilities in place,” one submission stated according to the report.
Another submission also raised concerns with the single-lane road leading to the site.
“(The) proposal will increase traffic along Hoy Road which is a safety risk as it is a single lane road. (The) carpark and use will increase anti-social behaviour on site and in the surrounding area,” the report stated.
The site is subject to some flooding according to the council’s report and is located 200m away from a residential property, however, the relocation is understood to be “reasonable”.
“The proposed temporary use of the site for the rowing club, while not fully consistent with the existing scheme, is deemed reasonable as relocation is required due to the Lake MacDonald Dam upgrade works and allows the rowing club to continue its activities during this period,” the planning report stated.
The Lake MacDonald Rowing Club was contacted for comment by this publication.
