A “beautiful” young man is fighting for his life after swerving to avoid a kangaroo in the fog, leading to a horrific head-on crash.
Kyron Trickey, 23, is in a critical condition in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital after a horror crash on Old Bruce Highway at Federal, on Tuesday morning.
He remains in an induced coma.
Another man, 21, of Brisbane, was flown to a Brisbane hospital with critical injuries after a ute headed the opposite direction possibly swerved to avoid hitting a kangaroo and collided with another vehicle.
A police spokeswoman said initial investigations indicated the Toyota HiLux collided with the Skoda Karoq, with reports of a kangaroo on the road.
The QAS spokeswoman said Kyron and another 20-year-old man were taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital with serious chest and back injuries.
Mr Trickey’s stepmother took to social media to share what happened.
“Our beautiful young son was involved in an horrific accident on the old Bruce Hwy on his way to work,” Carissa Trickey said.
“He has sustained huge injuries and is fighting in the ICU.
“He hit a kangaroo on an extremely foggy road and it pushed him into oncoming traffic which unfortunately resulted in significant injuries for him and everyone involved.”
She said he was fighting for his life.
“He has injured his L4 which lacerated his intestine, he has massive internal bleeding, a bleed on the brain, fractured jaw and abdomen injuries.
“He is a fighter and Dave and I are in absolute disbelief that this is even real.
“We love you so much Kyron … we are all with you every step of the way mate.”
In a heartbreaking blow for the Sunshine Coast family, the crash comes about a year after Kyron’s father, Dave Trickey, nearly lost his life in a motorcycle crash which left him wheelchair bound and partly paralysed.
On March 21, 2023, Mr Trickey was involved in a horrific motorcycle crash just metres down the road from their farm at Cooran, Noosa.
More than a year on and Mr Trickey is still awaiting nerve replacing surgery but in an amazing milestone has regained slight movement in his left arm.
Mrs Trickey said the family was “absolutely traumatised” by the crash and that it felt “surreal” to be going through this all over again.
“Kyron is such a wonderful young man and such a careful driver...to think that the accident happened is mind blowing for us all,” she said.
