There was plenty of glitz and glamour on show as Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club members and supporters gathered to celebrate 90 years of sun, surf, and mateship.
The Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club held its 90th Anniversary Gala Ball at the Sunshine Coast Function Centre on Saturday, October 28.
One of the oldest organisations within the Sunshine Coast region, the Mets has been based at Kings Beach since 1933.
Boasting a proud history, the club’s origins link back to Brisbane and the Metropolitan Life Saving Club with its first official patrol at Kings Beach on October 7, 1933.
The strong volunteer tradition continues at Kings Beach to this day, a fact that Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club President Brett Magnussen is proud of.
“I‘m most proud of our club culture, the people within the club, and the job we do for the public,” Mr Magnussen said.
“We all have that strong sense of community service in us, it’s a great way to make connections and I think that is why people love lifesaving and being part of the club.”
Mr Magnussen said it was great to gather to celebrate the storied history at the club.
“Over the next 10 years, we‘re looking to develop our facilities and provide a better outcome for our members,” he said.
“Of course, we also want to keep our really good record alive in terms of keeping the public safe.”
Last season, there were more than 150,000 visitors to Kings Beach where Mets lifesavers volunteered 10,342 patrol hours and were responsible for 35 rescues, 29 major first aid cases, 434 minor first aid cases and 2374 preventive actions.
