Emergency services have revealed the extent of the desperate rescue of a lone, elderly sailor who was “knocked about” in rough conditions on his yacht north of Noosa.

In an almost 24 hour ordeal, authorities were alerted to the 70-year-old sailor who was 167km east of Double Island Point about 10am Wednesday, July 7, 2022.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority led the rescue after the distress signal was received from his 1m single masted yacht.

Merchant vessel Skiathos was diverted to the scene and brought it alongside the yacht with a rescue aircraft and a Royal Australian Air Force helicopter in company.

It’s understood the man suffered injuries to his arm and ribs and was unable to be winched up to the vessel or helicopter before nightfall.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said a water police vessel from Mooloolaba arrived on scene after traversing rough seas for 15 hours to get to the man.

She said the sailor had been “knocked about” in rough seas while he was hundreds of kilometres from shore.

The police vessel arrived on Wednesday night and took the sailor back to land for medical attention early Thursday morning.
