Flowers have been placed near where a 60-year-old man’s body was found at a popular Sunshine Coast beach.

On Friday, Sunshine Coast police said they identified the 60-year-old man who was found dead at a public beach access at Mooloolaba in the early hours of Thursday morning but were still working to notify his next-of-kin.

Senior Sergeant Matt Robertson said investigators had confirmed the man was local to the area and the death was still being treated as non-suspicious.

“The 60-year-old male has previously lived on the Sunshine Coast and police are preparing a report for the coroner,” he said.

“It is still to be confirmed if the next of kin are yet to be notified.”

Officers were called to the scene about 6am at Mooloolaba Beach near Parkyn Parade on January 12 and located the body of a deceased male in a camping tent near Beach Access 180, less than 50m from the lifeguard tower near the Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club.

Senior detectives said the man’s body was believed to have been there about five days and was found by a lifeguard who called it in.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Police said inquiries were still ongoing.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a crew was called in just after 6am but there was no transport required.
